Silvio Rusmigo is a freelance photographer whose work engages topics that deal with nature and the outdoors.
Both his independent and collaborative work with NGOs, share the objective of communicating the importance of exploring aspects of our surroundings which we all so easily ignore and forget to appreciate.
Silvio Rusmigo (b. Nicosia, Cyprus 1988) holds a BA in Interior Design from Frederick University in Nicosia (2006-2010) and is currently studying to complete an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the University of the Arts London (2016-2018).
Early in his design studies he developed a strong interest in photography, working as an assistant for Cypriot and international photographers in the fields of commercial, fashion and product photography. At the same time, he took on a number of independent commissions for local art publications and magazines. Having completed his BA, Silvio received a one-year ‘Human Resources Development Authority Grant’ from the Republic of Cyprus for employment as an Assistant Director & Producer and Studio Manager at MS Viewpoint, one of the largest production companies in Cyprus. With this team, he worked for two years (2010 – 2012) on a variety of TV advertising campaigns, among them Bank of Cyprus, University of Nicosia and Vodafone. Silvio helped launch the group MastArts, under the umbrella of the parent company MS Viewpoint; this group offered professional studio photography lessons to teenagers and adults. As a freelancer, Silvio maintains an ongoing collaboration with MS Viewpoint.
Silvio's current focus is on his personal projects that deal with nature and the outdoors. Through his long-term project ‘This is your Cyprus’ (2012 – today), he took on the personal challenge of communicating a contemporary visual account of his homeland. His drive stems from his personal concern that the island and its nature are often overlooked by the people of Cyprus. Through this project Silvio commits in sharing his perception of his home as something more vast and unexpected, in an effort to convey the importance of exploring our natural and cultural heritage, the worth of which is often disregarded.
His project ‘Within mountains, there lies’ which started in September 2015, extends Silvio’s work beyond Cyprus and signifies his eagerness to collaborate with NGOs, as he believes greatly in the role of Civil Society. Through this project, Silvio seeks to capture visual narratives to celebrate the ecological importance of the Prespa area and the need to protect it, and to recount the experiences of people working hard to achieve this purpose.
Parallel to these endeavors, is the commissioned work Silvio undertakes. Such ventures include a five-month commission from the Antiquities Department of Cyprus to photographically cover a selection of antiquities from the Archaeological Museum, a two-month commission by the Cyprus Tourism Organization to cover the 'authentic landscape' of 106 villages and their landmarks in Cyprus, a two-year commission to cover all the sites of conservation importance for birds in Cyprus for BirdLife Cyprus’ publication ‘Important Bird Areas of Cyprus’ by Hellicar et al. (2014), and others.
His ongoing partnerships include his collaboration with the 6x6 Centre for Photography in Limassol, dedicated to the art and practice of photography. Fruits of this collaboration include the Outdoor Photography Workshops jointly organized by 6X6 and Silvio, aiming to deliver effective photography-instruction, hands-on assistance and subject-knowledge transfer while wrapping up with group discussions and projections of the work produced.
