Tour du Mont Blanc
In 2019, I hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) with my wife Vasiliki and one of my closest friends, Yiannis. Unlike when we hiked the Colorado Trail (CT), this time I decided to take my camera along, at the time, my Nikon D850 paired with my trusty 35mm f/1.4 (if I did it now, that lens would be replaced by the GF 45 f/2.8).
Now, let me make this clear,
I wasn’t in “work” mode.
I actively try not to be when I’m traveling. When I’m out there, I want to capture my experience, not chase images to satisfy the photographer in me. I also try hard not to disrupt my companions’ rhythm just because I see a “good frame.” A holiday is meant to be lived, not staged.
That said… if you give me a camera for 10 days, while walking through mountains and valleys at that quiet, steady pace, I will come back with a few images.
It’s inevitable.
And while that’s true anywhere in life, hiking makes it crystal clear. In a single day, you’ll ride a rollercoaster of highs and lows. You’ll see a sunrise you’ll never forget. You’ll laugh with someone in a way you never quite do in daily life. But you’ll also be tested, sometimes more than you’d like. The weather can turn on you in minutes. A calm, easy walk can suddenly become a life-threatening scramble, and you find yourself wondering if you’ll see the next day.
